PuTTY, originally developed for Windows operating systems by Simon Tatham, is a network file transfer application, serial console, and terminal emulator that supports a slew of networking protocols including, but not limited to, SSH, Telnet SCP, rlogin and a lot more. It is also open sourced, which commonly means that the releases of the software will be well tested and have many suggested featured by outside sourced.
Some of PuTTY's features include the control over the protocol version and SSH encription key, port forwarding, and emulation of xtrerm, VT102 control sequences and ECMA-48. PuTTY includes support for IPv6 and local serial port connections, 3DES, AES, Arfour, Blowfish, and DES. With this many features, it a surprise that the software is free and even open sourced. This can be considered a rare find.
The name of the software, "PuTTY", has no definitive meaning behind it, however "tty" is the name for the terminal in the Unix tradition. It is commonly recognized to be short for the term "Teletype". Since it's release, PuTTY has been ported to various other popular operating systems, but has the most support on the Windows operating system which it was originally created for.
PuTTY consists of several components which include: PSCP (SCP client), PSFTP (SFTP client similar to FTP), Plink command line interface, pterm (a terminal emulator) and more, which makes it favorable and definitely worth giving a try, especially since it is at no cost to you. However, it is worth keeping in mind that this current release that is able to be downloaded here at Rocky Bytes is currently in beta stage, so it may be unstable at certain times. Though, have tested it and works well.
This software has been around for quite some time, and it's development dates back to the late 90s, 1998 to be exact. It has been a usable SSH-2 client since October 2000 and has gained a following ever since it's release around this time. It has challenged it's competitors ever since it's release.
This recent release of PuTTY includes fixes for four security holes from its previous release that fixed one bug that prevented passwords from being automatically retained in memory, which adds on to the many reasons why you should try the software out.
